Rare 9 Kestner Christmas Angel Bisque Doll Store Display Closed Mouth Antique
This is a very rare antique early 9 Kestner Christmas Angel doll store display made for the French market. I believe she dates to 1880-90, she is marked only with a 4, she definitely looks like a Kestner but has no plaster pate, her original stringing had broken when I received her and she has been restrung like the original stringing to hold her wings in place so they move. She has a stunning square face, closed mouth, feathered brows with blue paper weight set eyes all original with her platinum blonde mohair wig set in tight curls almost like new. Her smooth bisque head has no chips, cracks, or kiln flaws. Her neck swivels on her rare angel composition one piece body with moving detailed wings inset in back. The body is in very nice original paint, one small crack at her inside elbow, looks like retouched paint at her toe tips.
The detailed wings on her body had a light golden color that had been flaking so I had them preserved in 24K gold leaf along with her wooden sceptre she was holding in a hole in her right hand. The red ribbon tied on her appears original to her. I was told she was a rare Kestner special angel body doll for Christmas Store Display.
I have never seen an antique doll body like this before. The base or stand is black painted wood, unmarked with her original wire that is bent so it slips into the stringing holes of her wings to hold her upright or more of a flying position.
Her arms are beautifully sculpted to hold the sceptre or staff in right hand and the other is bent to wave with the left hand. Her lower body is chubby sculpted legs with nice detail to her knees, buttocks, and feet. She has light crazing in a few spots. The doll has no smells, comes from a non smoking home. I tried to list all her flaws which are few considering her age and delicate nature.
This is not just a rare 9 closed mouth early Kestner but a piece of History, Museum quality. I can take more photos if needed, I lighted her head and saw no damage or repair to her.
