It's a diamond in the rough! This Jumbo Steiff Studio Elephant spent the majority of its years being displayed during the Christmas season at Gaylord's department store, near Chicago.
It has had lots of love shown to it over time, and the condition has deteriorated a little because of it. This would be an ideal piece for restoration, or for someone that can look past the condition flaws- or even appreciate why they're there, and the story to tell behind them! I believe this piece was manufactured around the 1950's, perhaps a little earlier.
The wheels below it are likely original to the piece. I believe it would have been suspended on two long steel bars, likely a "pull behind" for parade or show piece. Now, this straw-filled mohair elephant sits on a painted white wooden platform, 61"x41.5" There are four wheels, painted red, supporting it, each is 9.5in tall. Patched hole by neck 5"x6.5". Glue spot on trunk 2"x1.5". Weight, around 80lbs (w/ platform). The original Steiff button and tag in the ear are gone, but there is a hole in the correct location where it once was.
